Tanker Driver Resume

Tanker work is procedure-heavy. Loading and unloading are a substantial part of the job, product handling has rules that vary by customer and by commodity, and a liquid load behaves differently under braking than anything else on the road.

A tanker recruiter is reading for the endorsement first, then for whether you have handled their product category, then for whether you understand the loading procedure at their sites.

Illustrative wording below. Never list an endorsement you do not hold — tanker endorsements are verified against your MVR.

Common mistakes

Not stating which endorsement you hold

N and X are different jobs. Say which one, by letter and by name.

Leaving out the product category

Food-grade, chemical, petroleum and dry bulk are separate hiring pools. Name what you have hauled.

Treating loading as unimportant

On a lot of tanker accounts the loading and unloading procedure is most of the job. It is where the risk is, and it is what employers want to see you understand.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between the N and X endorsements?

N is Tanker. X is the combined Tanker and HazMat endorsement. X requires the HazMat background check.

Do I need a TWIC card for tanker work?

Not always, but many terminals and all port facilities require one. Having it widens the jobs you can take.

Can I get into tanker work without tanker experience?

Yes. Many bulk carriers hire experienced drivers with the endorsement and train them on product handling. Emphasise your safety record and procedural discipline.
