Moving into fuel from general tanker or other freight
Fuel hauling is the most procedure-heavy work in the industry and hires the most conservatively. Carriers are insuring a placarded, flammable, multi-compartment load going into retail sites with the public nearby, so a resume that reads as casual gets filtered immediately.
What moves you forward is evidence of process discipline — and that can come from outside trucking.
- The X endorsement is the entry ticket. Put it first, with the date it was issued.
- General tanker time is the strongest transfer. Say how long, what product and whether the trailer was baffled or smooth-bore.
- Compartment loading, product sequencing, retain and drop procedure, and meter or bottom-loading experience are the specifics a fuel recruiter reads for.
- Static discipline, bonding and grounding, vapour recovery and spill-response training belong on the page even if they came from a terminal job rather than a driving one.
- Industrial, refinery, chemical plant or military fuel-handling backgrounds transfer strongly. So does any job with a documented lockout or permit-to-work process.
- Night delivery is the norm. Existing overnight experience is worth a line.
- What does not transfer well: general freight experience on its own. Without an endorsement and some process evidence, years of van work is not the qualification here.

Common mistakes
Not showing you understand ullage and gauging
Overfilling a retail tank is the classic fuel-delivery incident. Showing that gauging is routine for you is a direct safety signal.
Omitting the doubles endorsement
Many fuel accounts run pups. If you hold T, list it — it opens a set of jobs that otherwise screen you out.
Not stating night availability
Most retail fuel delivery happens overnight. Saying you are available removes the biggest screening question.

Is fuel hauling good pay?

Can I start in fuel with no tanker experience?
