Common mistakes
Leading with mileage
A local employer does not care about your lifetime miles. They care whether you can run 18 stops in a shift without falling behind.
Hiding the physical side of the work
Hand-unloading, lift gates, stairs, basements and dollies are the job. Saying you do it is a qualification, not an admission.
Treating customer service as unimportant
Local drivers are the face of the company at every stop. Distributors hire on this. Say something about it.
Not mentioning early start times
A lot of local work starts before dawn. If that is fine with you, say so — it removes a screening question.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Class A for local driving jobs?
Not always. Many local delivery jobs use straight trucks and need only a Class B. Local tractor-trailer routes require a Class A.
How do I show I know the area?
Name the metro area or the counties you have covered. Local route knowledge is a genuine advantage and employers value it.
Should I list stops per day?
Yes, if you know it. It is the clearest single indicator of local delivery capability. Do not estimate wildly — a range you can stand behind is fine.
Is OTR experience a disadvantage for local jobs?
No, but the resume needs rewriting. Move customer-facing and handling work up, and state that you are seeking home-daily work so the employer does not assume you will leave for a long-haul seat.
