The hard part of being a new CDL holder is not the resume, it is knowing who will actually hire you. A lot of postings say "2 years experience required" and a new driver reads that as a closed door across the whole industry. It is not.
Three groups regularly hire entry-level: large carriers with finishing programs, local employers whose insurance allows new drivers, and specialised operators facing chronic shortages. Each screens slightly differently, and your resume should be aimed at the one you are applying to.

CDL details that matter here
- Large OTR carriers: screening for a clean MVR, a current CDL, no disqualifying record, and willingness to be out. Your resume should signal availability and trainability.
- Local employers — construction, delivery, waste, municipal: screening for reliability, physical capability and local knowledge. Emphasise attendance and hands-on work.
- Specialised operators — some tanker, waste and utility fleets: screening for safety discipline. Emphasise procedure-following and any safety training.
- Insurance minimums, not preference, are why some employers cannot hire new drivers. It is not personal and it is not negotiable, so spend your time on the ones that can.

Common mistakes
Applying only through job boards
Not a resume mistake, but the biggest practical one. Entry-level hiring happens through carrier recruiters and school placement offices far more than through Indeed.
Hiding a job-hopping history
It will show in verification. If you have short stints, group or explain them briefly rather than leaving a recruiter to assume the worst.
Not stating that you are seeking entry-level work
A recruiter who does not know you are new may screen your resume against experienced standards. Say it in the summary.
Leaving off endorsements you tested for
A new driver with HazMat or Tanker is meaningfully more employable than one without. It is one of the few levers you have.

Most large national carriers run new-graduate training programs, and many local employers hire new CDL holders when their insurance allows. Your CDL school placement office is the fastest source of the current list in your area.
How long until I can get a better job?
Most carriers open up at one year of verifiable experience, and a lot of doors open at two. That first year is the gate.
Should I take a company-sponsored program?
It is a legitimate path, but read the contract terms carefully — most involve a commitment period with a repayment obligation if you leave early. That is a personal decision, not a resume one.
