The previous guide covers the formula. This one is organised differently: by license class and experience level, because what belongs in your summary changes substantially depending on where you are in your career.
A driver with fifteen years should not write the same opening as a driver with eight months, and a Class B delivery driver should not be borrowing an OTR driver's wording.

Class A, new graduate
Lead with the license and the training. Do not imply road experience.
Recently licensed CDL Class A driver seeking an entry-level position with a carrier offering finishing training. Completed a 160-hour CDL program in manual-transmission equipment covering inspection, backing, coupling and on-road driving. Four years of prior construction experience with a consistent attendance record.
Class A, one to two years
This is the point where most carrier doors open. Lead with the fact that you have crossed the one-year mark.
CDL Class A driver with 1 to 2 years of over-the-road experience operating dry van equipment on 48-state freight. Experienced with electronic logs, trip planning and appointment-based delivery. Seeking a regional position with more consistent home time.
Class A, six to ten years
You have enough history to be selective. Use the summary to say what kind of work you want, not just what you have done.
CDL Class A driver with 6 to 10 years of regional and OTR experience across dry van, reefer and flatbed equipment. Tanker and HazMat endorsed. Experienced with cargo securement, temperature-controlled freight and multi-stop delivery. Seeking a dedicated regional account.
Class A, fifteen years and up
Depth is the asset. Name the breadth of equipment and the range of operations, then be specific about what you want now.
CDL Class A driver with 15+ years of commercial driving experience across OTR, regional and dedicated operations. Equipment experience includes dry van, reefer, flatbed and tanker. Experienced with DOT compliance, trip planning and driver mentoring. Seeking a dedicated or local position with a stable schedule.
Class B, local delivery
CDL Class B driver with 3 to 5 years of local delivery experience operating straight trucks with lift gates on multi-stop routes. Experienced with route sequencing, customer delivery documentation and daily vehicle inspections. Seeking a home-daily delivery position.
Class B, construction and municipal
CDL Class B driver with 6 to 10 years of dump truck and construction hauling experience. Experienced with load weights, site backing, tarping and seasonal plow operation. Seeking year-round municipal or construction driving work.
Class C
CDL Class C driver with Passenger and HazMat endorsements and 3 to 5 years of experience operating passenger and small hazardous materials vehicles. Experienced with DOT compliance, passenger safety procedures and route scheduling. Seeking a full-time transport position.

Frequently asked questions
Should I say the exact number of years?
A range is safer and reads the same. It also stays accurate for longer without editing.
What if I have gaps in my driving history?
The summary is not the place for it. State your total relevant experience, and let the work-history section show the dates.
Do I need a different summary for each carrier?
Not each carrier — each job type. One version for regional, one for local, one for OTR is usually enough.
